Basic Life Support (BLS) is a level of medical care which is used for patients with life-threatening illness or injury until the patient can be given medical care in a hospital. It is provided by trained emergency medical technicians (EMT) in the pre-hospital setting.

BLS generally does not include the use of drugs or invasive skills, and can be supplemented with the provision of Advanced Life Support (ALS).

An important advancement in providing BLS care in New York State, is the availability of the automated external defibrillator or AED, which can be used to deliver defibrillation. This improves survival outcomes in cardiac arrest cases, sometimes dramatically. In addition, BLS Technicians can administer Albuterol in asthmatic patients, and Epi-Pen for patients with severe allergic reactions.
